A midsummer night's dream

Recommended

The musical A Midsummer Night’s Dream by the English Student Theatre is a youthful musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy about love and the confusion love can create.

A magical musical of youth and the craziness of youth, confusion and relativity of love in the words of the Great Bard.

The plot is set in a modern global metropolis where Theseus, the great oil magnate and dictator, is getting ready to marry Hippolyta, queen of the last indigenous peoples living at the mouth of the Amazon river. Four adolescents are troubled by first love – Hermia is in love with Lysander, while Helena is in love with Demetrius. All of a sudden, Demetrius falls for Helena, mostly because of her filthy rich father, the mob boss Egeus, who outright adores Demetrius and pressures Hermia to marry him. Hermia and Lysander decide to elope, but Hermia’s friend Helena spills the beans to Demetrius, who wants his bride to (not) be back. At the same time, a fight breaks out in the fairy kingdom in the tropical rainforest, where King Oberon and Queen Titania quarrel over Oberon’s infidelity and his illegitimate son. Oberon orders his pages – the Freaks – to place Titania under a spell, so she will fall in love with the first creature she encounters. After Oberon’s magical intervention, the tropical rainforest, where our eloped lovebirds and the fairy queen are joined by amateur actors rehearsing a performance for the wedding day, becomes the set of a real midsummer night’s love mess. Everything works out in the end – the young lovers are paired as they should be, Titania and Oberon make up, and Theseus releases Hippolyta so she can return to her Amazonians.

The musical runs 2 hours and 15 minutes, has two acts, and is performed in English with Slovenian subtitles.
