The contrabass quartet Scaramelli Bass Quartet consists of four young contrabass players, all of them students of the Ljubljana Academy of Music, winners of awards for best performances in national and international competitions, and members of the world’s best youth orchestras (Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, Orchestre des Jeunes de la Mèditerranèe, European Union Youth Orchestra). They made their first live appearance last April at the final concert of the ESTA (European String Teacher Association) in Ljubljana’s Slovenian Philharmonics. Their first concert earned excellent reviews, so the members decide to carry on as a quartet. They’ve been playing ever since, appearing in Slovenia under the auspices of the Musical Youth of Ljubljana (‘Mladi mladim’ concert series, ‘Glasba na vodi’ concert), at the Festival of Urban Culture in Kočevje, and at various events abroad. Last December they made their first appearance in Croatia at the concert organized by the Musical Youth of Croatia in Osijek.

Their repertoire consists of various arrangements of well-known classical pieces for orchestra, chorus, and opera. The highlights among the chorus pieces the Quartet play are arrangements of famous chorus pieces by Serbian composer Stevan Mokranjac and arrangements of select Slovenian folk music. Aside from their classical and more serious repertoire, the quartet also know how to have some fun with melodies from Slovenian, Macedonian, Serbia, Bulgarian, and Roma folk music.

It is worth mentioning that all members of the quartet use contrabasses made by the famous Italian instrument manufacturer Sergio Scaramelli, hence their name ‘Scaramelli Bass Quartet’.
