The puppet play, intended for the youngest viewers, is a lyrical comedy fairy tale that takes us through the life of a small caterpillar that nobody likes because she’s not the prettiest girl in town. When the caterpillar grows bigger and thicker – after all, eating is her favourite thing to do – she encounters a man and an animal, both of whom react differently to the sight of a caterpillar. One is delighted, the other disgusted.
So the caterpillar goes on with life until, one day, she turns into a beautiful butterfly. Everyone stares when they see her and cannot help but marvel at her beauty. The play brings the age-old message (The Frog Prince, The Ugly Duckling, Russian tales) on how seemingly ugly things can transform into their complete opposite.
The play urges us to believe in ourselves and stick to our path, even though the road can sometimes be rocky and unfair, as things always tend to turn out for the best.
The play was inspired by Eric Carle’s A Very Hungry Caterpillar.
